U.S. Rep. Jared Golden cited his personal experiences as a Marine combat veteran to advocate for an amendment to legislation that would provide child care services for veterans.

“Readjustment counseling helped me to better understand that the physical and emotional reactions I’ve had returning from Iraq were, in fact, normal,” Golden says. “And once I understood this, it became easier for me to deal with these reactions head on.”

Golden’s amendment will require child care coverage of visits with mental health counselors, along with the other medical visits covered by the legislation.

The amendment was endorsed by Republicans and passed on a voice vote.

“None of my fellow veterans should have to choose between caring for their child — for their children — and getting the mental health care they need,” says Golden. “And, just like I did, many veterans need readjustment counseling. My amendment makes sure readjustment counseling services are covered under this bill.”
