King Questions Defense Secretary on Cyber Warfare

WASHINGTON - Sen. Angus King is concerned that the Department of Defense is not doing all it should in the field of computer warfare.

The Maine independent says it's clear that computers are now for more than war games - they are part of the weapons of war.

"I wonder if we should be developing a theory of deterrence similar to nuclear deterrence in the 50's, 60's and 70's, which served as well, actually until today," King said. "So that people understand if they come against our cyber infrastructure, they will pay a price."

Earlier this week King questioned new Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter about cooperation and coordination between the DOD and other federal agencies. King is concerned the agencies are not cooperating on intelligence gathering as they should, as well as planning a response to cyber-attacks.

"Please assure me that you will be coordinating with CIA and NSA (National Security Agency) so we are not duplicating, overlapping, spending more of the taxpayers money then we have to," King said, "and, worst of all, not sharing whatever information is being derived in this field. You are absolutely right."
