LePage Slams Teachers Union for Supporting Ballot Initiatives

BANGOR, Maine - Gov. Paul LePage is going after the state teachers' union for its support of two questions that will appear on the November ballot.

"The MEA wants legislators to support a 10 percent income tax on successful Mainers," LePage says in his weekly radio address.

LePage took the Maine Education Association to task for its support of Question 2, which would apply a 3 percent tax to Maine's top earners - those with an annual taxable income of $200,000 or more - to create a fund for K-12 learning programs. The MEA has also spoken in favor of raising the minimum wage to $12 an hour.

LePage called the MEA a special interest lobbying group that uses the dues of its members to meddle in politics.

A call to the MEA seeking comment was not immediately returned.

In the interest of full disclosure, the MEA represents most of the news staff at MPBN.
