Libya as a Model for Aiding Revolt

Libya as a Model for Aiding Revolt

Retired U.S. Marine Gen. James L. Jones, who served as the first National Security Advisor in the Obama administration, called for the U.S. to back NATO when aiding future revolutions abroad, as it did in Libya. Jones' remarks were delivered during the William S. Cohen Lecture at the University of Maine.

Jones called the middle east uprisings against dictatorship “the most important events that have happened on the planet since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.”

Jones said the United States should not act alone, but rather serve as support for NATO or other international coalitions. He cited the outcome in Libya as proof that American lives can be spared while helping foster democratic revolution abroad.

This talk was recorded November 17, 2011 in Orono.
