List of Maine's Top High Schools Contains Errors

A report from earlier this week listing the nation's top high schools — on which a number of Maine schools appeared — contains apparent errors.

In its annual rankings of the nation's high schools, U.S. News and World Report used enrollment data from the 2012-2013 school year from the National Center for Education Statistics.

As it turns out, the state enrollment numbers that year for some of Maine's top 17 high schools were actually higher than the figures cited in the study.

The gap was especially wide at Brewer High School, which had never made the list before and shot all the way to No. 5 in the state.

U.S. News said its enrollment was 384 students. The state had it at 735.

The superintendent in Brewer was out of the office Friday, but in an interview with MPBN earlier this week, Jay McIntire said the high school has seen legitimate improvement due, in part, to students arriving in 9th grade better prepared than in the past.
