Maine Braces for Pre-Holiday Snow Blast

This week's pre-Thanksgiving snowfall isn't just expected to be inconvenient for travelers - it could also be unseasonably heavy. Maine is forecast to get between 3 and 12 inches of snow from tomorrow morning until about 10 Thursday morning, says meteorologist Tom Hawley of the National Weather Service in Gray.

"This would be above normal for the time of year - we don't normally get this kind of snow early in the season," Hawley says. "Portland's average snowfall for November would be just over 2 niches, so given that we're looking at 9 inches or so, that would be above normal. It's certainly early."

Southwestern Maine is expected to get hit hardest, with the northernmost part of the state seeing the least snow. Hawley says temperatures after the snowfall will be below normal, but not frigid.
