Maine Bridge Project To Happen Sooner Due To Lack Of Traffic

The Maine Department of Transportation says a 70-year-old bridge in the Bangor area will be demolished and replaced by a new structure.

The department says it is replacing the Grist Mill Bridge that carries Routes 1A and 9 over the Souadabscook Stream. The old bridge is made up of three bridges built on top of each other, and the most recent one dates to about 1950.

The state says it has closed the bridge to traffic.

The project's part of reconstruction work on a nearly two-mile stretch of Route 1A that will cost close to $9 million in total.
