Maine Chamber of Commerce Gives LePage Tax Reform Plan Mixed Reviews

AUGUSTA, Maine - The Maine State Chamber of Commerce says it is supporting some provisions of Gov. Paul LePage's tax reform package, but not the entire plan.

Chamber President Dana Connors says the group supports the goal of reducing the personal income tax and shifting more of the state tax burden to the sales tax, but it opposes a provision to tax non-profits.

"That's one where we felt that, more appropriately, it's an issue that needs to be addressed," Connors says, "and we encourage the larger institutions to work with municipalities around service fees."

Connors says the group also thinks the governor's proposal to eliminate the $10,000 property tax exemption for all homeowners would be a step in the wrong direction. They would like to see the exemption increased.

He says the group is not taking a position on the governor's proposal to abolish the personal income tax entirely.
