AUGUSTA, Maine — Democratic legislative leaders are taking Maine Gov. Paul LePage to task for focusing mostly on law enforcement during his one-day summit aimed finding solutions to the drug crisis.
Senate Democratic leader Justin Alfond and House Speaker Mark Eves say the drug epidemic cannot be solved by law enforcement alone. They're urging a "comprehensive approach" that includes a focus on health care and substance abuse treatment in addition to bolstering law enforcement.
The administration has invited top prosecutors, judges and police to Wednesday's event at the Maine Department of Public Safety.
There are some health care participants, including the chief medical officer at MaineGeneral Health. But Eves and Alfond say lawmakers and others should be part of the conversation.
