Maine Law Firm Files Class Action Lawsuit Against Volkswagen

PORTLAND, Maine - A Maine law firm is suing Volkswagen about the carmaker's recent admission that it rigged emissions tests on "Clean Diesel'' vehicles.

Portland-based Verrill Dana filed the lawsuit against Volkswagen Group of America on behalf of Maine residents who own Volkswagens installed with software that helps the cars cheat on emissions tests.

The Portland Press Herald reports the suit accuses Volkswagen of fraud, breach of warranty and other violations of federal and state law. Verrill Dana partner Thomas Newman says it's the first lawsuit filed against Volkswagen in Maine.

The Environmental Protection Agency accused the company of intentionally violating federal laws. Volkswagen executives admitted to the deception and later disclosed that an internal investigation suggests as many as 11 million vehicles worldwide could contain the software.
