Maine now has nearly 700 known cases of COVID-19. That's 65 more cases than reported Sunday, the state's biggest one-day jump since the outbreak began. The reported number of cases rose to 698, while the death toll from the coronavirus remains at 19, unchanged from Sunday, said Dr. Nirav Shah, at a media briefing Monday afternoon.

The new figures the Maine Center for Disease Control released Monday include 55 new cases found among residents and staff the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation, announced separately Sunday.

The outbreak at the Augusta nursing home, and two other outbreaks at nursing homes in Belfast and Scarborough, have been identified over the past week, accounting for 86 cases and three deaths.

About two-thirds of the state's cases - 450 - have turned up in two Maine counties, Cumberland and York, officials say. But cases have also been on the rise in Kennebec, Penobscot and other Maine counties.

Piscataquis County remains the only one of Maine's 16 counties that has not yet reported a case. State health officials say residents should nonetheless behave as though the virus is in the community.

Since the outbreak began in Maine, 124 people have been hospitalized and 273 have recovered.
