Maine Center for Disease Control Dr. Nirav Shah says Maine's tally of COVID-19 cases rose overnight by 39, for a total of 1,095 cases since the pandemic began. Another person died, bringing the total number of deaths to 53. At Thursday's CDC briefiing, Shah said the victim was a woman in her 50s from Cumberland County.
Nineteen of the new cases are in Penobscot County. At Wednesday's briefing, Shah said several cases had been identified that day at Hope House in Bangor but turned up too late to be included in Wednesday's tally.
Another 14 new cases occurred in Cumberland County. Over the course of the pandemic, 631 people have recovered - 15 more than yesterday - and 170 were hospitalized.
Shah said the number of cases identified at Tyson Foods in Portland rose overnight from eight to 10. He said the CDC is conducting universal testing at the plant, which is undergoing a cleaning.
Another 17 cases - one more than identified Wednesday - have occurred at Hope House in Bangor, for a total of 21 cases there so far, Shah said.
Two-hundred-thirty-five residents and staff at several long-term care facilities have become infected since the pandemic began, Shah said, and health care workers account for 255 of Maine's cases so far.
Shah stressed the importance that people take care of mental and emotional wellbeing, as well as their physical well being.
