Maine had a surge of pertussis, or whooping cough, cases in January, according to a Center for Disease Control surveillance report. Fifty-five cases were reported, which is more than double the five year median of 24.

Most cases were in older children, ages 11 to 19. Hancock county saw the highest rate, followed by York and Waldo counties.

The state Center for Disease Control says the best way to prevent pertussis is get vaccinated. The CDC also advises washing hands often and coughing into your upper sleeve or elbow if you don't have a tissue.
