Maine's Youngest Deer Hunters Have Best Day In Years

BANGOR, Maine - Maine's young hunters might have hit a five-year high for deer harvesting during the state's annual day for youth deer hunting. The Bangor Daily News reports state deer biologist Nathan Bieber says preliminary data indicate there were more than 1,000 deer kills on Oct. 20, which was the day of the youth hunt. Some of those were record by adult hunters participating in the archery season.

But he says the number still suggests youth hunters took substantially more deer than in any of the previous four years. The young hunters took between 659 and 876 deer in those years.

Maine's fall hunting seasons for deer, moose, bear and wild turkey are all in swing. Friday's the final day of the year that it's legal to pursue bears with hunting dogs.
