Millinocket School Board to Consider Transgender Policy

MILLINOCKET, Maine - Millinocket's school board is set to consider that district's first policy on transgender students when it meets tomorrow.

Superintendent Frank Boynton says his is one of several Maine districts to consider such policies in the wake of a Penobscot County Superior Court order that prohibits discrimination against transgender students.

He says the policy outlines what the school should do "with respect to the facilities and the use of the building, and basically it's to get ahead of anything that would happen with bullying or harassment of a student, and in a very real attempt to make all students feel comfortable in the building."

The policy covers issues including privacy, pronoun use, restrooms and locker rooms. It also addresses safety. Boynton says the school board has already approved the policy "in the first reading," and if they adopt it tomorrow it will become official.
