Mills OKs Bill To Give Additional $5 Million To Maine Nursing Homes

Gov. Janet Mills signs a bill in June.

Maine nursing homes and residential facilities will be getting millions of dollars in additional state and federal staffing funds under a bill that Gov. Janet Mills will allow to become law.

Last summer, Mills held the bill over, citing concerns that it might violate federal law. After some research, she says now believes that it is legal and will allow it to be become law when the Legislature returns to work next month.

The measure is retroactive to July 1 and provides just over $5 million in additional state and federal money over the two-year budget.

Mills’ decision drew praise from members of the Appropriations Committee, which learned of the decision Monday.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the bill would appropriate $32 million to nursing homes.
