State Agriculture officials say they've received additional federal money to provide $50 worth of free fruits and vegetables to an additional 1000 low income Maine seniors. The produce is provided by participating local farms.
To be eligible for the Maine Senior FarmShare program seniors must be 60 years or older and meet income eligibility guidelines.
Program Manager Donna Murray says about 17,000 Maine seniors are currently signed up with 84 participating farms.
“In every county,” she says. “We have enough farms where, just about anywhere in the state of Maine that a senior may live, there should be a farm close enough to them that they would be able to participate in the program.”
Murray says some farms even deliver.
More information, including a list of participation farms, is available by contacting the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry websiteor a local Area Agency on Aging.
The deadline to sign up is September 21st.
