National Group Calls For Sports Authority Chair To Resign

A national Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization is calling for the resignation of Hal Pierce, chair of the Combat Sports Authority of Maine, over a series of Facebook posts.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has released screenshots of Pierce's Facebook posts which show the word “infidel” - superimposed over an American flag - as well an image of bacon. The text reads “Pork Fact #76: People who eat bacon are less likely to blow themselves up.” Another post seeks to raise fears of Islamic domination of the west.

The Combat Sports Authority regulates boxing and mixed martial arts competition in the state.

The seven-member board is appointed by the governor. A statement from Gov. Janet Mill’s office says she is aware of the concerns, takes them very seriously, and is looking into the matter. A call to the authority was not returned.
