The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) has been approved by a House- Senate conference committee and now goes to the two chambers for approval.
U.S. Senator Angus King says it is a compromise bill that has a lot of impact on the state.
“Funding for destroyers at Bath Iron Works, work, continuing work at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, jet aircraft, the engines of which will be made at Pratt Whitney in York County,” says King.
The bill also authorizes 12 weeks of paid parental leave for two-million federal employees. But some provisions were dropped, like tighter controls on a U.S. President to make war or divert money to border wall projects. Funding for the authorized projects is in a separate appropriations bill.
“This requires some compromise. You have a Democratically controlled House, a Republican-controlled Senate and a Republican in the White House, so, you know, like Mick Jagger said, you’re not always going to get what you want.”
