New England Locations Identified for Coastal Grants

Dec 6, 2015

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is recommending more than $900,000 in federal funding for coastal habitat restoration projects in New England.

The agency is calling for $611,000 for a dam removal project in the town of Exeter, N.H., about 16 miles from the Maine border. The agency says the dam is the lowest dam on a major tributary to Great Bay and its removal would help fish habitats.

NOAA also wants to give $300,000 to the town of Harwich, Mass., to restore 55 acres of tidal wetlands in Muddy Creek by replacing two existing undersized culverts with a bridge and channel.

The money is part of $4 million in recommended funding for restoration projects around the country.
