Number of Uninsured Mainers Rose in 2013

AUGUSTA, Maine - New figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau show that the number of Mainers without health insurance grew in 2013.

According to data released Tuesday, Maine was one of two states that saw an increase in the uninsured rate between 2012 and 2013. The other was New Jersey.

The report says 11.2 percent of Mainers were uninsured last year, compared with 10.2 percent the year before. It says there were 147,000 uninsured in 2013, up from 135,000 the year before. The report has a margin of error of 10,000 people.

The rate of people without health coverage declined in 13 states. Nationally, the uninsured rate dropped to 16.7 percent in 2013 from 16.9 percent the prior year.
