Opioid Crisis Summit To Explore Solutions That Could Work In The State

More than 1,100 people are expected to be at the Augusta Civic Center Monday for Gov. Janet Mills' summit on the opioid crisis.

Gordon Smith, drug policy czar for Mills, says the conference will bring in some experts from outside Maine to share their own experiences.

“What’s working in other states,” says Smith. “We have a wonderful group of people coming from Rhode Island, from Vermont, from New Hampshire, and the AMA President will give us a national perspective.”

Smith says the conference will also focus on programs that are working in Maine with sessions led by experts in their field or by people in recovery.

“What really works in your state? What wouldn’t you do again?” he says. “We have a limited amount of resources in Maine and we want to strategically put them where the gaps are and where they can do the most good.”
