Planned Parenthood to Spend $500K in Maine Races

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Planned Parenthood will spend at least $500,000 in support of Rep. Mike Michaud's Maine gubernatorial campaign and other races in which the group identifies reproductive rights as a key issue.

The organization says in a statement that the campaign is the most aggressive in its history in Maine and will include field operations and advertisements on television and online.

Maine Action Fund PAC Chairwoman Nicole Clegg says Planned Parenthood seeks to oppose "extreme politicians'' who want to roll back reproductive rights. She says Planned Parenthood supports Michaud because he has been an ally of the organization in Congress.

Michaud is a Democrat. The Republican LePage opposes abortion on a personal level, but has not introduced legislation limiting it.

An email to a LePage spokesman was not immediately returned.
