Police: Charter Bus Flips After Driver Falls Asleep; 4 Hurt

Maine Department of Public Safety

A charter bus overturned Tuesday night on I-95 in Burnham, leaving four people with minor injuries.

That's according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. He says the bus driver told investigating troopers he fell asleep at the wheel.

"The bus drifted to the right side of the roadway, overturned down an embankment and came to rest on its side," McCausland says. "Fortunately, it make no contact with trees, vehicles or anything else."

State Police cited the driver for failure to control the bus. Three ambulances brought the injured passengers to area hospitals. Authorities used a school bus to bring the remaining passengers to a hotel in Waterville.

The group, from Schnectady, New York, was headed to Orono for a Christmas concert scheduled for Wednesday night. They're expected to continue on to the concert as planned.
