Portland Chorus to Perform in Washington for World Refugee Day

A group of young singers from Maine will perform Friday night at the Kennedy Center in Washington as part of World Refugee Day.

The Portland-based Pihcintu Multicultural Chorus is made up of children who left home countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East to escape war, persecution and famine. Choral Director Con Fullam told MPBN in 2011 that he feels a special affinity with refugees and immigrants and started recruiting kids from Portland schools.

"Knowing that, for me, music has always been a very powerful, healing thing," Fullam says, "I thought it would be a great idea to invite as many different refugee communities as possible."

The Pihcintu Multinational Children's Chorus performs Friday night at the Kennedy Center in Washington. The show is being streamed live beginning at 6 pm. The chorus has also been invited to the White House.
