Question 1 Debate in South Paris

Question 1 Debate in South Paris

Two years after Maine voters defeated a proposed casino in Oxford County, they're being asked to re-consider a four-season resort casino in the Western Maine town of Oxford. Supporters say it will create thousands of permanent, good-paying jobs. Opponents are skeptical. They say more sustainable industries make better sense for the region. MPBN's Susan Sharon moderated the debate, which included a panel of reporters from various media outlets.

Question 1 on the November ballot in Maine reads: “Do you want to allow a casino with table games and slot machines at a single site in Oxford County, subject to local approval, with part of the profits going to specific state, local and tribal programs?”

The debate was sponsored by the Advertiser Democrat, a Norway-based weekly newspaper.

The debaters are Rob Lally from "Yes on One," Dennis Bailey from "Casinos No," John Williams, Executive Director of the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce and supporter of the casino ballot measure and Jeff Rosenblatt from "Oxford Hills No on One."

The media panel posing the questions consists of: Judy Meyer, Managing Editor, "The Sun Journal;" Jeff Wade, News Director, WGAN News Radio and Brian Yocono, Reporter and Anchor for WCSH-TV.
