Report: Visitors to Maine's National Parks Up in 2014

BAR HARBOR, Maine - A new report from the National Park Service shows that in 2014 the state's national parks attracted more than 2.5 million visitors who spent more than $221 million, supporting almost 3,800 jobs.

Acadia National Park Planner John Kelly says 2014 saw the highest number of visitors since 1999. He says sales are tracked in seven different categories.

"Lodging and camping is one, restaurants, groceries, fuel, local transportation, retail purchases, and then the last would be admissions or fees for services - like a kayak tour would fall into that category," Kelly says.

The national parks in Maine include Acadia National Park and Saint Croix Island International Historic Site.

Ed is a Maine native who spent his early childhood in Livermore Falls before moving to Farmington. He graduated from Mount Blue High School in 1970 before going to the University of Maine at Orono where he received his BA in speech in 1974 with a broadcast concentration. It was during that time that he first became involved with public broadcasting. He served as an intern for what was then called MPBN TV and also did volunteer work for MPBN Radio.
