On this special Saturday edition of the Pulse, Maine Public's Irwin Gratz spoke with political reporters Steve Mistler and Mal Leary to unpack moments from the first debate of the high stakes Maine U.S. Senate race.

At Friday's debate, Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Sara Gideon exchanged barbs  over health care, judicial appointments and President Donald Trump.

Independent candidates Lisa Savage and Max Linn are considered longshots, but both could affect the outcome of a contest that will be decided by a ranked-choice voting runoff if no candidate receives an outright majority on election night.

You can read more about the debate in Steve Mistler's articleand in this week's edition of the Political Pulse newsletter.

Maine's Political Pulse was produced this week by Willis Ryder Arnold.
