PORTLAND, Maine - The Bangor Daily News reports that Shaw’s Supermarkets is fighting an effort by the Teamsters Union to organize the chain’s pharmacists at 16 stores in Maine, arguing that its pharmacy managers are supervisors and therefore not eligible to be represented by a union.
Brett Miller, president of Teamsters Local 340 in Portland, confirms that the union is recruiting pharmacy workers at Shaw's. "The OSCO drug organizing campaign is in its infancy stages, so I really can't comment much further than that," Miller says.
According to the Bangor Daily News, the dispute over the eligibility of pharmacy managers is before the National Labor Relations Board.
A spokesman for Shaw's could not be reached.
