Snowe, Others to Release Plan to Fix Partisanship

AUGUSTA, Maine — Former Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine is laying out ideas for how to boost productivity and promote bipartisanship in Congress.

Snowe, a co-chair of the Bipartisan Policy Center's Commission on Political Reform, will help unveil the group's report, "Governing in a Polarized America: A Bipartisan Blueprint to Strengthen our Democracy," Tuesday in Washington.

She'll be joined by others, including former Senate Majority Leaders Democrat Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Republican Trent Lott of Mississippi.

Snowe said Monday that her priorities include holding more open primaries, using redistricting commissions to draw electoral lines instead of state Legislatures and improving communication between branches of government.

The report will also address proposals on filibuster reform, campaign finance and ways to encourage young people to choose public service.
