South Portland Marijuana Petition to be Submitted

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ A group of activists hoping to put the question of marijuana legalization for adults in South Portland before voters is submitting its petition.

Citizens for a Safer Maine is expected to submit more than 1,500 signatures to South Portland City Hall on Monday. It needs 959 valid signatures to put the issue on November ballot.

David Boyer, Maine political director for the Marijuana Policy Project, says it wants to start a discussion about marijuana and ``the benefits of ending prohibition.''

Activists are being joined by Democratic Senate candidate Shenna Bellows at a press conference before submitting their signatures.

In November, Portland became the first Maine city to approve a referendum legalizing marijuana possession for adults. The group is also trying to get marijuana legalization on the ballot in York.
