UNITY, Maine - Maine's Unity College will soon be issuing a graduate degree. The Maine Board of Education voted unanimously Wednesday to allow the small environmental science college to offer its first Masters program.
College President Stephen Mulkey says a Master of Professional Science degree - known informally as a PSM - will be the first program offered. Some PSM's exist for bio-medical and bio-technology fields elsewhere, but Mulkey says finding such a program for the environmental sciences is more challenging.
"So there's a vacancy nationwide and there's almost a virtual vacuum in New England," he says. "There's only one remotely comparable program at the University of Massachusetts."
Mulkey says a PSM degree is usually targeted to someone already working in a science field who needs further professional and management training. Unity's model will utilize both on-campus and online teaching tools. The first program will be offered this fall.
