Volunteers Collecting Sigs for Ranked-Choice Voting Initiative

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Maine residents hoping to get a ranked-choice voting initiative on the ballot are making their final push to collect signatures.

More than 100 volunteers will be working to gather as many as 6,000 signatures across Maine on Saturday and Sunday.

The group has collected more than 55,000 signatures so far and needs just more than 61,000 to get the initiative on the ballot.

Under the initiative, voters would rank candidates by order of preference. The first-choice votes would then be counted, but if no one receives a majority, then the person who received the fewest is eliminated.

Voting officials would then distribute the 2nd place votes from the ballots of the eliminated candidate to those that remain. That would continue until someone gets more than 50 percent.
