What Happens When A Liberal Filmmaker Meets His Conservative Neighbor?

Apr 5, 2018

Alan Kryszak’s documentary “Who Made You In America?” explores political viewpoints as they relate to immigration. Kryszak made the film with students at the University of Maine at Machias, who discovered that their own assumptions about the ideological divides between rural and urban, conservative and liberal, failed to capture a much more complicated reality.

For Kryszack, that journey began with his first - somewhat impromptu - interview with Machias resident Harold Cokayne. Harold’s house caught Kryszack's eye. Maine Public Radio's Morning Edition host Irwin Gratz talked with Kryszak, and Morning Edition producer Willis Ryder Arnold talked with Cokayne about what happened next.

Krysza's documentary featuring Harold Cokayne titled "Who Made You in America?" airs Thursday night on Maine Public Television.
