7/23 Tue – THE BENEFITS OF WALKING
Sure, many people hike or run, but walking tops those activities in popularity — 90 percent of American adults say they walk for leisure or pleasure. We’ll learn about the benefits of walking, such as: improving physical and mental health; exploring new places; and connecting with others. Where are some good places to go for a walk in Maine? And what does “volkswalking” mean? (Original air date June 11, 2024)
7/24 Wed – THE RIGHT TO COUNSEL
Earlier this year Governor Mills signed into law a bill “to improve the delivery of legal services to low-income people to ensure their Constitutional right to counsel.” We’ll learn about efforts to address the extreme backlog of people waiting for counsel— including the establishment of two new public defender offices.
7/25 Thu – PUBLIC HEALTH UPDATE
For the past few weeks, Covid cases have been on the rise across the country. We’ll learn about precautionary measures to take in Maine, including the latest vaccination recommendations. And we’ll discuss other public health concerns, from vector-borne disease to rabies to other medical issues.
7/26 Fri – HOUSING CRISIS: CONVERTING OLD BUILDINGS
The statewide effort to alleviate the housing shortage includes the conversion of older buildings into affordable housing. Hotels, schools, courthouses and nursing homes are among the kinds of structures that can be repurposed as living space. What do these projects entail, and how well do they meet the needs of those seeking housing? This show is part of our series about Maine’s housing crisis: “The Cost of Living.” (This program was originally scheduled for 7/22/24)
