Monday 9/25 – MAINE’S NEW CDC DIRECTOR

The new director of Maine’s Center for Disease Control & Prevention joins us to introduce herself and discuss her priorities as the state’s public health leader. Dr. Puthiery Va started the job last month. Her background is in epidemiology, and, most recently, she oversaw public health in the Navajo Nation in Arizona. We’ll learn about her plans for the future—and she’ll answer your questions about Covid and other health concerns.

Tuesday 9/26 – IMMIGRANTS & WORK

From health care jobs to manufacturing, immigrants work in many essential fields in this country. We learn about employment issues involving foreign-born people in Maine—what obstacles they face, what skills and assets they contribute, and what’s being done to help connect people to jobs in Maine. We’ll also learn about the phenomenon of immigrants having to work in lower-level jobs than they are qualified for or previously held in their countries of origin.

Wednesday 9/27 – SECRETARY WILLIAM COHEN

Former Secretary of Defense William Cohen joins us to discuss national and world affairs—and offers his perspective on how to have more meaningful public discourse over the divisive political issues of our times.

Thursday 9/28 – HUMAN IMPACT ON NATURE

Most of the time, when people interact with natural places, they disturb the environment in some way. We talk with experts about Leave No Trace guidelines, as well as other considerations for protecting and preserving Maine's woods, waters, land and other natural areas. This program is part of Maine Public's new outdoor series "Borealis."

Friday 9/29 - FRANCO AMERICAN INFLUENCE

Franco American contribution to American literature has been significant and influential, but the Franco American dimension of such work has too often remained invisible. We’ll learn about Résonance, a recent project founded by a collective of writers, poets and academics, that seeks to bring visibility to Franco Americans and their creative work.
