Fat Bikes And Winter Cycling

You’ve probably seen them – mountain bikes with enormous tires.

Now skiing areas are making room for fat bikes, some communities are developing trails for them and there are even winter fat bike races.

We’ll learn about this relatively new form of outdoor recreation as well as other ways to keep cycling throughout the winter season. We’ll also discuss the growing popularity of e-bikes and bike safety issues in the news.

The number of pedestrian deaths in Maine rose last year to 17 — a figure nearly three times the number in 2018, but in line with previous years, according to the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.

Maine biking enthusiasts will now have a new digital tool at their disposal for searching out favored rides throughout the state.

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine will release the "Where to Ride" resource Tuesday.

MaryBeth Luce oversaw the project. She says the group worked with clubs to select the best routes in the state.   

"They been specifically chosen because they've either been vetted personally by the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, or by trusted partners of ours," Luce says.

This is the time of year when more people are out walking and biking on Maine’s roads. That means there are more interactions between what are called “vulnerable users” and motor vehicles.
