ROCKLAND, Maine - Transportation officials say train service previously limited to Brunswick is planned to run farther north in Maine this summer, at least during weekends.
 
The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority says the Downeaster service is planned to run weekend trips up to Rockland this summer, expanding its current service that terminates in Brunswick. The plan was outlined Wednesday night during a public meeting in Rockland.
 

PORTLAND, Maine - Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority Executive Director Patricia Quinn says another tie replacement project will begin later this year.

But Quinn told Maine legislators this week that the project won't cause nearly as much disruption as a tie replacement project last year. That went on for months, forced late and canceled trains and depressed ridership.

BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) _ Construction has begun on a 650-foot by 70-foot layover facility in Brunswick that will service Amtrak Downeaster trains overnight.

 WCSH-TV reports that the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority received its final permit from the state Department of Environmental Protection and began construction earlier this month.
