There are currently four Democrats in Maine seeking their party's nomination in next year's U.S. Senate race. In recent weeks, Maine Public has talked with each of them about the issues that are most important to Maine Democrats, according to pollsters.

Maine Public's Political Correspondent Mal Leary spoke with House Speaker Sara Gideon about taxes, the opioid crisis and, of most concern to Democrats, health care.

Maine taxpayers were granted some relief by the legislature and Gov. Janet Mills in the session that just concluded, but that does not mean they will see much in the way of any real cash. People in some communities may actually see their property taxes go up.

AUGUSTA, Maine — As Mainers kick off the new year they'll be greeted with a new sales tax on certain food items.

Tonight, city councilors in Saco will consider adopting a plan that would let seniors defer property tax payments.  The idea is to help long-time residents stay in their homes as they struggle to keep up with climbing taxes.  But as Patty Wight reports, critics say the plan merely moves the financial burden to the next generation.
