This week, students are beginning to arrive back on campus at colleges across Maine, and many are being greeted with new procedures: increased hygiene, new behavior rules, and lots of COVID-19 tests. In fact, some colleges are testing students as much as two or three times per week in hopes of containing a virus that has already led to outbreaks at other schools across the country.

The University of Maine has unveiled a new center, dedicated to the science of parenting.

The University of Southern Maine has created a new position honoring the state's first African-American legislator. The Talbot Teaching Fellow is named for Gerald Talbot, who served in the Maine House of Representatives from 1972 to 1978. He also worked with the Maine chapter of the NAACP and the State Board of Education.

The University of Southern Maine has received a collection of nearly half a million maps — an estimated $100 million gift that is believed to be the largest in the history of the University of Maine System.

The collection of more than 450,000 rare maps comes from Dr. Harold Osher, a cardiologist from Portland. The Osher family has previously donated many maps to the university and helped establish the Osher Map Library in 1994.

Family spokesperson Glenn Parkinson said the Oshers hope the collection is used to enhance educational opportunities for local students.

LEWISTON, Maine - A Maine university has removed artwork from a campus gallery upon learning the artist of the three works is a convicted sex offender.
The University of Southern Maine removed the works by Bruce Habowski when a relative of one of his victim's called to complain. The Portland Press Herald reports a criminal background check shows Habowski was convicted of unlawful sexual contact in 1999 and served six months in jail.
USM says the paintings were removed after receiving a complaint about the artist, not the content of the art.
