Utilities Join Forces for 300-Mile Power Cable in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine - A utility and a transmission company are joining forces to try to make a 300-mile power cable tapping Maine wind power and Canadian hydropower a reality.

The Maine Green Line proposed by National Grid and Anbaric Transmission would be buried on land in Maine and then run across the ocean floor to greater Boston. The companies say it would help New England states meet green-energy goals while lowering electric costs for consumers.

National Grid and Anbaric made the announcement Tuesday, a day after another group petitioned Vermont officials to bring Canadian power to New England through a new line under Lake Champlain.

All six New England states are interested, but Massachusetts and Connecticut are driving the push to bring clean hydropower from Canada to help them meet their clean-energy goals.
