Maine Public Community Representation Statement

Adopted by the Maine Public Board of Trustees on October 27, 2022.

The Maine Public Board of Trustees believes diversity, equity, and inclusion are key goals of our organization. We are committed to seeking out diverse perspectives and creating spaces where all people are valued regardless of sex, age, race, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, ability, national origin, or religious affiliation. We celebrate the diverse geographic, economic, and political perspectives that help us fulfill our mission to connect the people of Maine to each other and to the world through the open exchange of information, ideas, and cultural content.

We are dedicated to ensuring Maine Public is a place of belonging for all employees, members, listeners and viewers through the State of Maine and beyond. We know this takes intentional work, requiring us to uncover and challenge our own biases while considering how privilege shapes our understanding of these goals. We have the benefit of many resources and experts in this work, and we will continue to partner with leaders in the fields of anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

One of our organization’s core values is “an unwavering commitment to fairness, transparency, tolerance, diversity, and accountability in everything we do.” Our strategic plan outlines a goal to “increase staff diversity and inclusion to incorporate a broader range of voices and perspectives throughout our organization.” The Maine Public Employee Handbook includes policies addressing Discrimination, Sexual Harassment and Other Illegal Harassment, Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Non-Discrimination Policy.

Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion extends to our board of trustees, employees, members, and programs we develop and support.
