FairPoint Strikers to Sing Carols at Officer's Home

PORTLAND, Maine — Striking FairPoint workers say they've got a Christmas present for the president of the company's operations in Maine.

A group of workers say they're heading Tuesday to the home of Mike Reed outside Waterville to sing Christmas carols.

Peter McLauglin of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers said workers hope Reed will feel the Christmas spirit but carolers are bringing lumps of coal "just in case."

About 1,700 workers in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont have been on strike since October.

Both sides have accused the other of not being willing to compromise. The company declared an impasse and imposed its final offer that freezes and replaces the old pension, requires workers to contribute to health care, and allows the company to hire contractors.
