BIDDEFORD, Maine — A vacant industrial space in southern Maine that was formerly home to a Hostess Brands bakery has reportedly found a new tenant.
The Portland Press Herald reports an announcement made Thursday at the Maine Real Estate & Development Association’s annual meeting revealed that FedEx will be bringing a distribution center to the 265,000-square-foot space in Biddeford.
A FedEx spokesperson didn’t return messages seeking comment. Daniel Stevenson, the city’s director of economic development, confirmed FedEx’s imminent move.
The Memphis-based company already operates a similar distribution facility in nearby Saco.
Stevenson says he was informed that FedEx would lease and occupy the entire facility.
Hostess Brands filed for bankruptcy and shut down its factory in 2012, laying off 380 workers.
Officials say it’s unclear how many new jobs FedEx will bring.
