Kennebunk Utility Won't Seek to Relicense 3 Dams

KENNEBUNK, Maine - The Kennebunk Light & Power District is surrendering its license for three hydroelectric dams along the Mousam River.

Trustees voted this week to alert federal regulators that they will let the licenses expire in 2022 for Twine Mill Dam, Dane Perkins Dam and Kesslen Dam.

It's unclear whether they'll be removed, or have fish passages added to help fish swimming upriver to spawn.

Todd Shae, general manager, said Kennebunk Light & Power will work with federal regulators, state agencies and other interested parties to determine what happens to the dams.

Local conservationists and sportsmen support the removal of the dams to allow the lower nine miles of the Mousam River to flow freely.
