Ferry Trips Between Maine and Nova Scotia Will Look A Little Different — Whenever They Return

The Cat ferry arrives in Portland Harbor, Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

Ferry service between Maine and Nova Scotia is being suspended for a third year in a row, and when it does resume, passengers will find renovated terminals on both sides of the Gulf of Maine.

All fixed up, but no one to use them: that's the fate of the ferry terminals in Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Both have undergone multi-million-dollar improvements in anticipation of the resumption of CAT Ferry Service between the two ports.

The work in Bar Harbor is finished. The Chronicle Herald reports phase one of improvements to the Yarmouth, Nova Scotia terminal will be complete by summer.

But the U.S.-Canada border remains closed to all-but essential travel and the Cat operator, Bay Ferries, has already cancelled plans to sail this year. The company says it's hoping the once-popular Maine-to-Nova Scotia service will resume next year.
