Commuters brave the single digit temperatures Fahrenheit as they arrive on a ferry, Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022, in Portland, Maine. A mass of arctic air swept into the Northeast, bringing bone-chilling sub-zero temperatures.

Maine is reporting another 1,340 cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday.

The state CDC is reporting 8 additional deaths of people with COVID-19.

The number of hospitalized COVID patients has continued to fall in Maine. There are 344 today, down from 358 on Tuesday. 83 are in critical care. 38 are on ventilators.

State officials said Wednesday that they've shipped roughly a quarter of the 125,000 free COVID-19 rapid tests that are available to eligible Maine households as part of a month-long pilot program.

The program launched last Friday in partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation. It allows Maine households in rural areas with low vaccination rates to place an order to receive five free tests. State health commissioner Jeanne Lambrew said within the first few days, 8,500 tests have been delivered, and another 30,000 are in transit.

Maine residents can find out if they're eligible by going to the website accesscovidtests.org and entering their zip code.
