WORCESTER, Mass. — A Maine resident has been convicted of a slaying in Massachusetts 20 years ago.
John Fredette was convicted Tuesday in Worcester Superior Court of first-degree murder for the 1994 slaying of 36-year-old Kevin Harkins. The 51-year-old Fredette was living in Saco, Maine when he was arrested in 2012.
Fredette faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole at sentencing Wednesday.
Prosecutors said Fredette and two co-defendants lured Harkins out of a Worcester bar and shot him in the head because he reneged on an agreement to offer false testimony in a drug case involving Fredette. His body was never found.
Fredette's lawyer said his client, although present at the time of the shooting, did not pull the trigger. He was the second suspect convicted. A third awaits trial.
