Exhibit to Honor Amelia Earhart's Visit to Maine

AUGUSTA, Maine — A group representing women pilots is planning to mark the 80th anniversary of Amelia Earhart's visit to Maine.

An informational display is planned for Saturday in a hangar at Maine Instrument Flight, adjacent to the state airport in Augusta.

Lori Plourd, chairwoman of the Katahdin Wings Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, tells the Portland Press-Herald that one of the goals is to encourage women to learn how to fly and show that aviation can be a viable career choice for women.

Members of the Maine Aviation Historical Society also plan to be on hand for the event.

Earhart visited Bangor, Waterville and Augusta in August 1934.

The aviation pioneer disappeared in the South Pacific in 1937 while attempting to circumnavigate the Globe.
