Maine Senate Candidate Dies After Motorcycle Crash

AUBURN, Maine -  A Maine state Senate candidate who crashed his motorcycle last month has died.

The Maine Republican Party said Stuart "Toby'' Pennels died early Thursday.

The 55-year-old Republican from Casco was running against Democrat Bill Diamond for Senate District 26, which includes Casco, Baldwin, Frye Island, Raymond and Standish.

Police said Pennels suffered major chest and shoulder injuries after he lost control of his motorcycle in Sandy River Plantation in early August.

His name was withdrawn from the ballot after the accident. David Sorensen, spokesman for the Republican Party, said a county caucus will be held Thursday evening to name a replacement candidate.

Dolby Funeral Chapel in Windham, which is handling the arrangements, confirmed his death to the Associated Press on Thursday.
